Ethanol, Sugar and Bioenergy

At Raízen's plants, every part of the sugarcane comes to life in a reuse cycle: this is what we call the circular economy. We use sugarcane to produce: ethanol (1st and 2nd generation), sugar, bioelectricity, biogas, and biomethane. Every stage adds value — nothing is wasted. We generate economic and environmental benefits, as well as contributions to the development of the sector

Ethanol

Sugarcane is one of the most complete raw materials for energy generation, featuring double the solar energy-to-biomass conversion rate. Therefore, it is our primary source for producing ethanol, biomass, and sugar. Ethanol produced from sugarcane emits, on average, 80% fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to Brazilian gasoline. Furthermore, it is highly versatile, as we can extract different types of ethanol from the same sugarcane for various purposes: from fuel (anhydrous ethanol) to hydrous and neutral ethanol, used in pharmaceutical production. In our plants, we produce approximately 3.1 billion liters of ethanol per year (reference figure for the 24/25 harvest)

2nd Generation Ethanol (E2G)

Through investment in advanced technologies, Raízen is the only company in the world to produce this biofuel on a commercial scale by repurposing subproducts from the production process. E2G stands out by using the bagasse from sugar and conventional ethanol (1G) production to produce even more ethanol. This repurposing provides an increase of up to 50% in production without increasing the planted area. Furthermore, this advanced biofuel features a 30% lower greenhouse gas emission rate compared to 1G ethanol. In addition, our E2G is certified by the rigorous sustainability standards of Bonsucro and ISCC.

Sugar

In the international market, we invest in the commercialization of raw sugar, which will be transformed into subproducts in industries worldwide. We constantly work to improve our processes and optimize logistical operations; to achieve this, we rely on customized solutions to meet each business's needs and ensure product quality and integrity during the mill-to-client journey. Likewise, we are committed to international sustainability standards and maintain a robust quality and safety system that guarantees certifications across all our units.

We also operate in the sale of sugar as a raw material for small, medium, and large industries. Our client base includes the country's leading brands across various segments. This is possible because we maintain constant investment in logistical and technological improvements to find increasingly profitable and secure processes. We also offer a pricing program that provides clients with fixed-price contracts, helping to reduce variables and assist in long-term planning.

Attention! Please stay alert to unauthorized third-party attempts to conduct fraudulent sugar sales. If you have any doubts regarding the veracity of documents, information, or commercial proposals in Raízen's name, contact us at compliancemonitoramento@raizen.com before proceeding with any negotiation, confirmation, or signature.

Bioenergy

We are the largest producer of energy generated from biomass. This means generating energy from organic materials which, compared to fossil fuels, produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, it is a predictable and perennial energy source, reaching its production peak precisely during the driest period of the year, when the hydroelectric matrix is under the most pressure.

Biogas and Biomethane

From the by-products of the sugar and ethanol production process, such as vinasse and filter cake, we produce biogas. This biogas can be converted into electricity or purified to become biomethane. Biomethane has the same applications as fossil-based natural gas, but it is a renewable source..
